Virgil Loatman: Buying a car is a big step. Make sure that you look into what you can REALISTICALLY afford, and what you realistically need. Do you need the coolest, hippest, best-looking car? Probably not. A car is also a big investment, and what's most important is that you buy a well-priced, reliable car. Check out consumer reports and make sure that you're car is reliable. For example, Honda's are insanely reliable, have a great track record, and also look good. But again, what's most important, is not how it looks, but how good an investment it is.You should have a down payment, but it's not necessary. That way, you won't have to finance the car for as long, or as expensive each month. You don't want your whole car payment going to a $400 car payment each month unless you have a really high-paying job. If you don't think you're credit is great, or haven't established as much credi! t, make sure you have a co-borrower. Also, stand your ground when negotiating a price -- if someone is offering you a price that's too high, don't be afraid to tell them you can go elsewhere.
