Should you always put end punctuation inside of quotation marks?

Blythe Noreiga: I completely agree with your fellow teacher. You are confusing two different things:These are not Direct Speech sentences. Individual 'headings' or labels that have been attached to characters in literature are being identified by quotation marks. If this word processor was not so basic, the words could easily have been in italics instead.

Matt Tiry: There is possibly a national difference in style. Americans tend to put the final punctuation inside the " in all cases , many Britons tend to look at the logic, and put the " before the final punctuation if necessary.
